Chemical, Physical, and Biological Characteristics of Urban Soils

چکیده
Urban soils provide an array of ecosystem services to inhabitants of cities and towns. Urbanization affects soils and their capacity to provide ecosystem services directly through disturbance and management (e.g., irrigation) and indirectly through changes in the environment (e.g., heat island effect and pollution). Both direct and indirect effects contribute to form a mosaic of soil conditions. In the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES), we utilized the urban mosaic as a series of “natural experiments” to investigate and compare the direct and indirect effects of urbanization on soil chemical, physical, and biological properties at neighborhood, citywide, and metropolitan scales. In addition, we compared these results with those obtained from other metropolitan areas to assess the effects at regional and global scales and to assess the generality of these results. Our overall results suggest that surface soils of urban landscapes have properties that can vary widely, making it difficult to define or describe a typical “urban” soil or soil community. Specifically, we conclude that (i) urban effects on soils occur at multiple scales; (ii) management effects are greater than environment effects, although environmental effects are more widespread reaching beyond the boundary of most urban areas; (iii) urban landscapes are biologically active in pervious areas and have a high potential for carbon storage and nitrogen retention; (iv) the importance of urban and native factors depends on the property being measured; and (v) cross-city comparisons support in part the biotic homogenization and urban ecosystem convergence hypothesis. Soils in urban landscapes are generally thought of as highly disturbed and heterogeneous, with little systematic pattern in their characteristics. As such, most studies have focused on human-constructed soils along streets and in R.V. Pouyat ([email protected]) and I.D. Effect of Urban Waste Compost Leachate on the Soil Physical, Hydraulic, Moisture Characteristics and Corn Yield
Compost leachate is a liquid resulting from physical, chemical and biological decomposition of organic materials. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of leachate compost on the physical, hydraulic and soil moisture characteristic curves. Also, the effect of leachate on the aerial organ fresh weight of corn was investigated. Leachate was added to clay loam and sandy cl...
متن کاملThe Effect of Urban Fuel Stations on Soil Contamination with Petroleum Hydrocarbons
Background:A critical environmental impact of the petroleum industry is the contamination of soil by oil and other related products which are highly toxic and exhibit molecular recalcitrance. Therefore, this study focused on investigating the total amount of petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in soil of urban fuel stations in Hamedan City, Iran. Methods:Thirteen high traffic urban fuel stations ...
متن کاملSoil invertebrates as bioindicators of urban soil quality.
This study aimed at relating the abundance and diversity of invertebrate communities of urban soils to chemical and physical soil characteristics and to identify the taxa most sensitive or tolerant to soil stressors. The invertebrate community of five urban soils in Naples, Italy, was sampled. To assess soil quality invertebrate community indices (Shannon, Simpson, Menhinick and Pielou indices)...

The use of organic matter such as urban sewage sludge may help sustainable soil fertility via improving the physical, chemical and biological soil characteristics. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of urban sewage sludge on chemical properties, soil basal respiration and microbial biomass carbon in a calcareous soil with silty clay loam texture. Therefore, three levels ...
متن کاملEffect of lichen biological soil crusts on soil properties derived from early Holocene sandy sediments
Introduction: Biological soil crusts are a community of cyanobacteria, fungi, lichens, and mosses and play key roles in arid and semi-arid regions including carbon and nitrogen accumulation, soil fertility, dust capture, soil conservation and stability. Recent studies show that the formation of biological soil crusts on mobile dunes areas is extremely difficult due to low vegetation cover, st...
